The first offerings were in the summer of 1959 when two one week sessions were available. A major ministry expansion occurred in 1965 with the construction of the Moyer Lodge and eight cabins. These were followed by the construction of the Hogan Village near the lake.
The Hogan Village was moved to another space on site out of the swampy area where the mosquitos were too numerous. In the late 1990's the Hogans were replaced with Sukkahs. A Sukkah is basically a screen house with a wooden roof and floor, eight cots and no electricity. These are available for retreat groups in the Fall, Spring and during the Summer when not in use by the Summer Camp program.
While Caroline Furnace is largely know by our Summer Camp Program, which now offers eight one week sessions each summer, we also have a large retreat population who are taking advantage of getting away to a place where they can plan, learn, grow and get to know one another better. We have an adult retreat center, Signal Knob, in Strasburg, Virginia that houses up to 20 persons. A perfect size for council planning retreats, adult Sunday school learning retreats or choir gatherings. We also have business groups who retreat with us, scrapbooking retreats, family reunions and continuing education retreats.
Through the years numerous other programs and retreat opportunities have developed and are offered year-round to groups of all ages
